Laser cutting a time- and cost-efficient method

The method is flexible, non-contact and can handle quick changeovers and dimensional changes, minimising rework. Laser cutting is time-efficient, but also reduces your production costs thanks to the narrow cut and minimal material waste. Compared to gas cutting, for example, laser cutting produces a finer cut and a smaller heat-affected zone. The surface is smooth and the cut is as narrow as a few tenths of a millimetre.

In other words, laser cutting is the most advanced technology for cutting advanced shapes.

How laser cutting in sheet metal works

A thin, perpendicular and focused beam from a high-power laser is directed at the workpiece using fibre optics or mirrors. When the laser beam hits the surface of the sheet metal, the energy is converted into heat and the material melts or vaporises completely. Laser cutting starts when the laser beam has penetrated the material at a certain point. The laser machine follows the programme for the chosen part and separates the material in the process.

The thickness of the material to be cut and the result of the cut depends on the performance of the machine, the cutting speed, the quality of the material, as well as on the operator's skill and experience in setting all the different parameters of the machine.

Great results with modern combi laser machines

With our modern combi-laser machines, we can get both laser-cut sheet metal and die-cutting. Countersinking, embossing, threading and other shaping are done in the same machine set-up as the laser cutting. This gives us an efficient and fast production process. Our latest machine also has unloading with a picking robot.

We can cut from about 0.5 to 10 mm in steel, 0.5 to 5 mm in aluminium and 0.3 to 5 mm in stainless steel. 

Amada LC 2012 C1 Laser cutting combination machine

At Plåt & Mekano Romator's laser department, we have no less than three combi laser machines, a very good capacity in our industry. The Amada LC 2012 C1 combi laser, together with our two Apelio combi machines, are in production around the clock. They are all of the CO2 laser type, 2kW, with integrated punching units in the same machine as the laser unit. In other words, we get two machines in one!

This type of machine has several advantages:

- For the right part containing mouldings, countersinks and threads, you save set-up time
- We get faster and more cost-effective production
- Engraving, punching, labelling, bumps, collars, threads and countersinking can be done in conjunction with the die-cutting process
- Punch smaller bends directly in the machine

We can cut 0.5 - 10 mm in sheet steel, 0.5 - 6 mm in stainless steel and 0.5 - 6 mm in aluminium. The machines can cut sheets in the size 2500 x 1250 mm.
